I expressed my frustration in the post, Wrestling Myself Back to Writing that I had not been keeping up with my writing goals. Fellow blogger, Helen C, told me about the Friday Writing Essential challenge.
So here is my attempt at this new writing challenge.
The challenge is to look at the picture and tell a story….
Fall Away
Another season blows through my leaves.
Another day passes, another leaf falls away.
The bitterness of winter is coming, my branches will stand bare.
My heart is stilled as I stand dormant.
The winter will seem endless, but life will return again.
Buds will begin to shoot forth.
Leaves will stretch toward the sun, seeking its nourishment, soaking its warmth.
But for now I am a fleeting burst of orange and red.
A final flame of glory, before the leaves fall away.

I may not be a lover of poetry, but this is wonderful. Very picturesque. Sure hope you do more WE challenges. Had you not, I wouldn’t have found. you. When you’re on Writing Essentials, check out the others. Different editors for different days of the week, and all different challenges.

I DID NOT know that you had it in you to write poetry. That was very beautiful, and you described nature perfectly well right there. And it has a title too! “a final flame of glory” – that is my favourite line and I thought it brought the poem home (good punchline!). Love the orange-ness of the tree leaves, maybe you’ll see more of those later this autumn.

Sadly we have very little Autumn in Texas. I would have to travel north to see such pretty colors!!
That is a pity. I suppose it’s very hot in summer and when autumn rolls around, all the leaves are so dry and fall to the ground early on in the season. If you’re up for it, maybe go on a road trip with your dog to see the pretty colours!
Many of the trees here are ever green and some of them seem to lose their leaves over night!
There are a few that change color….but they are few and far between!
Do you experience all 4 seasons in Australia?
I do hope there are a few trees that have different colours to brighten up your town! Yes, we experiences all 4 seasons in Australia – this is quite distinct in Melbourne and the temperatures fluctuate all year round.
The prettiest season in Texas is Spring. We have a lot of wildflowers and blooming trees.
Autumn is a bit of an after thought….Our summers are so Hot though we get very excited when the temperatures finally start cooling down a bit
I must admit I am a bit ignorant about the weather of Australia….for some reason I assumed it was warm year around.
Had no idea that Texas has a decent spring. Never thought your place had much flowers, glad now I know otherwise. Yes, I am a bit ignorant about the weather in the States 😉
It’s warm and humid in up north in Brisbane, Australia. So you’re right. But down south here where I live in Melbourne, we have four beautiful seasons 🙂
Awesome! I don’t know a lot about poetry, but I love this one! I have written a essay about maple tree (I was a maple tree 😉 long time ago. This poem reminds me of that essay. Interesting. Great job, Tree! Helen
Helen, I also don’t know much about poetry….this is frequently how my words choose to come out. It has crossed my mind quite a bit recently that I need to study poetry and learn more so I actually understand how to tweak it!!
It is interesting our poem/essay are similar….great minds think alike I guess!!

I think, maybe, the reason it is difficult for you to write is that what you write is so personal. “Tree” really comes through, even if you are writing about a tree. That’s what I love about your writing. Keep on writing.
I once had a rock on one side of which was written “Faith.” The other side read, “…is to keep on keeping on even when the meaning stops and wait until it returns.” I think that applies to writing, too. Everything you write doesn’t have to be great poetry or a pearl of wisdom. It’s okay just to be an irritated oyster.

I certainly feel like an irritated oyster sometimes….expecting perfection. I know in reality not everything I write will be super….I just need to remind myself (or have friends remind me!!)
