Recently my mom gave me this quilt made by her mother.
My grandmother lived to be 93 years old. I was very fortunate to share an adult relationship with her and my grandfather (he lived to be 92). They were married for 72 years.
The last time I saw my grandma (AKA Nanny) she was is a hospice hospital. I had flown to Ohio to spend time with her and grandpa. While I was there I drove grandpa to hospice so we could visit with Nanny. During our drive each day he would tell me stories of days gone by. He was a wonderful story teller.
During one of those stories he told me about the first time he met Nanny. According to grandpa they were 8years and 10 years and Nanny told her friends, “I am going to marry him.”
That afternoon, during our visit, I asked Nanny if Grandpa’s story was true or if he was just pulling my leg. Even though Nanny was somewhat sedated and not totally alert, she looked at me and said, “He was the cutest boy I ever saw.” Needless to say a few tears formed in my eyes.
I have several keepsakes from each of my grandmothers and with each I have happy memories. However, even without the physical reminders, they will forever live in my heart and in my memories.
The A β Z Challenge will run through April. Each day is a different letter and a different photoβ¦I hope you all enjoy!
What a lovely story, Tree. The quilt is beautiful and what a special thing to have. My grandmother lived to be 93, and was just a light in my life. She’s been gone for 8 years this month and I miss her a lot.
Susan
I’m glad you enjoyed my story.
It’s hard to lose them no matter how old they are.
I’m glad your grandma was such a blessing π
So cool- I love stories and photos about our ancestors. I can feel the love you had for your grandparents – and the quilt is just beautiful- what a wonderful keepsake.
I also love stories and photos from our ancestors. I really loved to hear Grandpa tell stories. He was quite the gifted story teller!
I really liked that Nanny signed the quilt
Thank you for sharing the beautiful stories and photos, Tree! Precious quilt!
I’m glad you enjoyed it Amy. Thank you!
What a lovely story, Tree. Thanks for sharing it with us. The quilt looks great. Mine doesn’t look half as good π
Thank you Helen. Nanny was very gifted at artistic endeavors.
Precious memories of your Nanny!
π thanks!
What a touching post, Tree! I love handmade blankets and such. Her’s is so beautiful.
My family is very spread out, generationally. I only met my maternal g-parents. They both passed before I was 18. However, all of them were handy with needles and threads. I have many sweaters & blankets my mother and grandmother have made. Such wonderful keepsakes!
I lost my paternal g-father when I was a child and paternal g-ma in my 20’s
I think that helped me appreciate how much time I had with the other two.
My grandma tried to pass on some of her needle knowledge….but it never took!!
I’m glad you have keepsakes from previous generations….they are truly blessings!!
How lucky for you to have such a close relationship with your grandparents. She was lovely!
Thank you Joanne!
What a beautiful story, tree. It brought tears to my eyes as well. And such a lovely reminder. Be well and have a good week.
Thank you Gemma!
I hope your week goes well too.
Aww! The story of your grandmother knowing she was going to marry your grandfather was adorable! And 72 years together is amazing! I know you are so thankful for the time you got to spend with them. π
I truly am. Thank you for stopping by.
I wish I still had my grandparents. There’s no one else in the entire world like them…for any of us!! I tell people that becoming a grandparent is why we have kids!! Loved the quilt your grandmother made. It reminds me of a book about an American quilt.
I think I have read all your A-Z posts but am just checking xx Rowena
Thank you so much for taking the time to read all of them Rowena. I’m still trying to finish reading several A-Z challenges…and there are quite a few of your posts I need to go back and look at. Somedays keeping up can be quite a challenge.
I do miss my grandparents….
Given your work, you’ll appreciate my post today about lost socks. I have terrible trouble keeping track of things. Photographed the mother’s day breakfast at the school this morning and then forgot to order the kids’ lunches. Also, got a flat tyre on the way home this morning. Weird stuff happens to me all the time. I’m now off for my nap before the kids get home. Hope you are having a great day. The sun is out here and the dogs have been roasting themselves outside xx Rowena
A nap? Nice!!
I do appreciate the sock post….just read it and laughed. I love those socks!
My day has come to an end…it is 11:12 PM and I am quite beat.
I hope you had a great nap and a fabulous evening
Sweet dreams! xx Rowena
