Changing Seasons

Month four of the Changing Seasons Challenge….sponsored by Cardinal Guzman.

Several big changes have happened in the backyard over the last month.

You may notice in this first picture…..a huge grassy, overgrown, out of control plant. One of those obnoxious plants  occupied each corner of the flowerbed. I dug them both out!!
Oh yeah….that was a task!

I replaced those “Cousin It” plants (as we call them) with 2 lovely climbing roses. The first is a Joseph’s Coat Rose

And second a lovely climbing rose with tiny white flowers (not sure of name – yes I buy and plant flowers without knowing their legal names!)

The other big change in the yard this month was the removal of a dead Cypress tree. This little guy didn’t stand a chance against Sugar (the lab).

And in its place a bottle tree. If you aren’t familiar with bottle trees, I’ve attached a link that explains a bit about them. They actually have a long history. I just think they are quirky and fun.

One might ask why the last photo has chicken wire around the bottom…..Sugar, that’s why! I planted flowers around the bottle tree. Once they take root they will withstand Sugar (the lab) but until they are strong…I must protect them!

Now that I have shared the big changes of the past month….let me share the blooms of this past month. Winter is certainly over!

And finally…the Texas Red Bud. The beautiful blooms are gone…and for the next 7-8 months just leaves!

P = Purple

I seem to be on a color theme! Honestly the “O” I just had a hard time thinking of something besides orange. As for using purple for “P” I just really like this flower and wanted an excuse to post it!

While visiting Brownfield Texas last weekend I saw very few wildflowers. Unlike here in Central Texas where wildflowers fill every open space of land. The one wildflower I saw was this lovely Tahoka Daisy.

The A – Z Challenge will run through April. Each day is a different letter and a different photo…I hope you all enjoy!

N = Needs

I work with adults with intellectual developmental disabilities. I teach them how to manage their money, pay bills and follow a budget.
One of the big lessons I teach is the difference between needs and wants. We talk about prioritizing bills. We talk about what it means to really NEED something not just want it.

Its a difficult concept to teach when it seems like everyone has so much stuff. Our culture here in the United States is so focused on things and acquiring more. How can a person be convinced they don’t “need” cable TV? How about “needing” a smart phone? Is it necessary to have the newest gadget or the latest style?

I try to reassure each student that survival is possible without access to 700 television stations and that humans lived for thousands upon thousands of years without the things we take for granted. Many of my students live on a very limited income and that makes it much more difficult to afford many bells and whistles….but that doesn’t stop them from wanting it all.

Each year a group of former students, that have “graduated” from my program, and I teach a breakout session at a conference specifically organized for people with disabilities. The students really enjoy sharing the knowledge they have learned. They also like being able to tell the conference goers that they have learned the difference between needs and wants.

One of my favorite student stories that I share whenever I get a chance is about a young woman I worked with several years ago. She lived independently in an apartment. One month she told me she was going to skip paying her electric bill so she could get cable! Most of my students can put the pieces together pretty quickly and they realize without electricity the young lady couldn’t even watch TV. They laugh…and hopefully they think before making such a decision themselves!!

M = Model A Coupe (1929)

Tina’s uncle was working on this car the first time I met him. He will be 80 this summer and continues to work on cars, tinker in the garage and fix anything that crosses his path.

Model A

Apparently he is planning to take me for a ride the next time we stop by! I can’t wait!
