Gone But Not Forgotten – DP Photo Challenge

Chelsea came into my life when her original person had to move into a nursing home. She was 8 years old at that time. Who would’ve thought I would get to spend more than half her life with her.

Chelsea

She celebrated a total of 18 birthdays. This picture was taken at her 15th birthday. Also known as her Quinceanera. She raised over 2 hundred dollars at this birthday party for a local rescue group.

She “worked” with my clients. As a social worker she frequently met people who had turned hard to the world…yet she had a way of turning their hearts soft again…if only for a minute!

Chelsea and Maggye

She travelled the country. Bringing smiles to all she met. Whether she was on a leash, in my backpack or sitting at a table, she was always well mannered and precious!

Chelsea and me

This was our last day together. I had to finally release this precious angel to the Rainbow Bridge. It was one of the hardest days of my life. Chelsea is gone but she will never be forgotten.

Maybe Tomorrow

Her arthritic fingers gripped the arm of the recliner. She slowly lifted herself out of the chair and toward the window.
Her heart beat just a bit faster with excitement.
Was that her son’s car she heard?
Oh how she hoped it was him.
Is it a blue Chrysler? No, its a red Ford.
She slumped back into the recliner.
She stared at the light reflecting through the window. The brightness was misleading, the temperatures were dropping. Frost formed on the window pain.
“I’m sure the roads are getting bad, maybe he will come tomorrow.”
Maybe Tomorrow, a result of the Friday Fictioneer’s photo prompt.

The Daily Post – Weekly Photo Challenge / Converge

“Photos are visual spaces where shapes and lines, objects, and people come together. Geometry in photography — shapes, diagonals, vanishing points….”

I have always been fascinated with photos and drawings of objects vanishing in the distance. An object that goes so far it disappears into the horizon. Objects like a railroad line or a country road.

Traveling through the wide open spaces of West Texas this past weekend I found many examples of vanishing points…here are two of the scenes I captured

The Walk

I walked every mile.

Distracted by the chatter surrounding me. At times hyper focused on the pounding of each step. One foot in front of the other, walking through the pain, this is nothing compared to chemo.

There are 1150 of us. Mostly women, mostly touched personally by breast cancer. Maybe it was a daughter they lost, maybe a mom, maybe a friend. For me it was my favorite aunt.

They say it isn’t a race. But we walk fast. It is hard to walk 20 miles in one day, wake up the next morning and walk another 20 miles then wake up one more day and walk another 20. So we walk fast. We try to spend the shortest time possible in our walking shoes. We stop for snacks, refill liquids and take our turn in the port-a-pot….then we walk on. If you stop too long the body will revolt. The body will stiffen up and refuse to keep moving.

We keep moving.

The miles are long, the emotions are raw, tears flow easily and laughter is spontaneous.

Total strangers cheer us up the next hill. Little children hand us candy, elderly adults sit along the route and clap their hands, dogs wear pink tutus….we, the people forming blisters on our feet, feel gratitude and kindness from every person cheering along the route. They too have lost someone, or maybe they fear losing someone, or maybe they fought the same fight….they thank us for walking we thank them for cheering.

Our family members surprise us along the route….a big hug, pat on the back and the same love that has supported all of our training up to this moment. The family members that watch us crawl out of bed each Satuday morning before sunrise so we can complete a training walk in July before the temperatures become unbarable. We must train. This is not a 5k. We can’t just show up and start walking….we must train.

We are fragile.

People post photos of their loved ones beside the walkway. Photos of the loved ones they have lost. Their signs tell us a daughter misses her mom, a husband misses his wife, a boy misses his grandma. They tell us how much our walk means to them. We are tired, even exhausted, we are fragile….we cry.

But in the end it is all worth it. We are making a difference, we are part of the solution, we are raising money to find a cure. The blisters will heal, our eyes will dry….a cure is what we need, so we walk…through the pain and toward a future without breast cancer we walk.

Shoes – For A Cause

This photo was taken Saturday 10/25/14 in Mineral Wells Texas

The shoes in this photo just completed walking 18 miles. The shoes and the people wearing them are extremely tired. But this is only a training walk. The real walk and the real milage will take place 2 weeks from the day this photo was taken.
These shoes will join thousands of other shoes and walk 60 miles in 3 days. The goal is to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

shoes

Each shoe represents someone’s battle against breast cancer. Some of those battles were won and others were lost.

But each shoe carries with it:
– hope for a cure
– tears for a loss
– courage for a battle hard fought.

At the end of the 60 miles each person will take off one of their shoes and hold it high. That moment will sybolize a salute to our fellow walkers who are survivors of this disease. It will also allow us a moment to reflect on those that have lost their battle against breast cancer. And those that continue to fight.

shoe salute

This walk will begin early morning 11/7/2014 and end the afternoon of 11/9/2014. If you are so inclined please keep the walkers, the survivors and the warriors that fight for a cure in your thoughts. Because, Everyone Deserves A Lifetime!
