Silence

You know that noise you hear when the power goes out?

Yes, silence!

If we are home alone and the house is quiet we assume what we are hearing is silence. When in fact what we are hearing is the lack of voices, televisions, radios, etc. We are not hearing silence. Silence is that noise that happens when the power goes off and the white noise is absent.

I experienced silence this past week in a totally natural way. We vacationed in Northern Ontario. Also known as the North woods or the bush.

One day I hiked up Rock Candy Mountain. When I reach the top I was surrounded by nature and silence. Standing on this massive rock I could see for miles. My view was a blanket of trees, with patches of blue water and a patch work of blue sky and white clouds. A large black raven soared in front of me…I was in his space.

On a different day I paddled the canoe to the other side of the lake and watched the sunset. It seemed as though the sun was sharing its magnificent beauty just with me. The sun and me, surrounded by silence as he slipped out of sight.

Silence….powerful, comforting, soothing…it may lack noise, but it holds much peace.

Odd Ball Photo Challenge: Week 20

For quite a few months we have dealt with daily construction at work. Rarely is there humor in  jackhammers slamming into concrete, driveways to the parking lot being blocked, backed up traffic or water interruptions. But today….we got humor!!

I sat in my car, finishing up a work call before walking into the office. I glanced down the street and saw this construction cone atop the light pole! How did this happen? I have no clue! But its funny!

If My Dog…

Pssst…..It’s me “the dog!”

I recently learned that my mom has been writing about me. She doesn’t know that I know. So this will need to be our secret! OK?

Here’s the thing. I love my mom and I really don’t mind her writing about me (I kinda like being a rock star!) but I think there are some things she has neglected to tell you.

First, I am not just “The Dog.” I have a name and it is Sugar. My whole name is Sugar Cookie, but that can be a mouthful.

I got my name the day my mom and I found each other. I was very skinny and covered with fleas. Mom said she wasn’t going to keep me, she already had too many dogs. But she couldn’t stand to see me in such bad shape so she drove me to the vet and asked them to take care of me.

She told the vet’s office once I was cleaned up and cleared as healthy, she would find me a good home.

The receptionist said I needed a name for the chart. Mom didn’t know what to name me. And since she didn’t plan to keep me, I think she was afraid if she gave me a name I’d be harder to give away! The receptionist said, “She is the same color as a sugar cookie!” So that is what they named me.

Needless to say Mom kept me (how could she resist) and the name stuck!

The other thing about me, that will also be our secret….even though I don’t have thumbs, I can still do a lot of stuff, like type!

Oops! Here comes Mom….I better go!

What Makes a Good Photo?

Earlier today I had a conversation with another blogger, Helen C. She was asking for opinions and advice on her firework photos. I realized I had a lot of the same questions. Our conversation also got me excited about going back and looking at the pictures I took on the 4th of July.

I really enjoy the pictures that “look” like I think a firework picture is suppose to look. But I kinda like the mistakes too.

I decided to post a few of the photos I took and ask you all what you think makes a good firework picture? Is it the colors, textures, diversity of shapes? Or is it the originality of the photo?

I think the first three pictures look pretty “typical” and the last two look anything but typical!
I really like the 4th picture….even though it barely looks like a firework was involved in it!

Circles and Curves

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge this week is to find Circles and Curves.

As I looked around Fort Worth Texas, I realized there were many items that matched the challenge description and explained why this city is still (proudly) called Cowtown.
