N = Needs

I work with adults with intellectual developmental disabilities. I teach them how to manage their money, pay bills and follow a budget.
One of the big lessons I teach is the difference between needs and wants. We talk about prioritizing bills. We talk about what it means to really NEED something not just want it.

Its a difficult concept to teach when it seems like everyone has so much stuff. Our culture here in the United States is so focused on things and acquiring more. How can a person be convinced they don’t “need” cable TV? How about “needing” a smart phone? Is it necessary to have the newest gadget or the latest style?

I try to reassure each student that survival is possible without access to 700 television stations and that humans lived for thousands upon thousands of years without the things we take for granted. Many of my students live on a very limited income and that makes it much more difficult to afford many bells and whistles….but that doesn’t stop them from wanting it all.

Each year a group of former students, that have “graduated” from my program, and I teach a breakout session at a conference specifically organized for people with disabilities. The students really enjoy sharing the knowledge they have learned. They also like being able to tell the conference goers that they have learned the difference between needs and wants.

One of my favorite student stories that I share whenever I get a chance is about a young woman I worked with several years ago. She lived independently in an apartment. One month she told me she was going to skip paying her electric bill so she could get cable! Most of my students can put the pieces together pretty quickly and they realize without electricity the young lady couldn’t even watch TV. They laugh…and hopefully they think before making such a decision themselves!!

M = Model A Coupe (1929)

Tina’s uncle was working on this car the first time I met him. He will be 80 this summer and continues to work on cars, tinker in the garage and fix anything that crosses his path.

Apparently he is planning to take me for a ride the next time we stop by! I can’t wait!

365 Days of Photos – Day 103

Back in January, Day 25 of the 365 Days of Photos, I posted photos of an abandoned house in West Texas. Tina and I have been making quite a few trips to West Texas over the last several months to visit with her dad.

One thing about making repeated trips to a place that has few alternative routes is you start to recognize landmarks. This past weekend we realized the abandoned house I had taken photos of 3 months ago had burned to the ground.

I found it sad to see such a beautiful old house sit abandoned and even worse to see it destroyed by fire. Someone’s memories were in that house. Someone grew up there, someone farmed there and someone shared that space with family and friends. Now it is gone….sad.

L = Llama

Sunday afternoon Tina and I chose to drive home from West Texas using the back roads. As we drove down the endless stretch of road I noticed 3 Llamas out of the corner of my eye.

Llamas

Do I stop? Do I put the car in reverse and back up the shoulder? Yes and yes!!

Llamas

These young ladies (honestly I have no idea if they are male or female – but they had beautiful eyelashes) stood and watched me walk to the fence. I slowly approached but avoided getting too close for fear someone would spit at me. Fortunately we had a friendly interaction. They allowed photos and even acted like they were expecting me to stop by and do a photo shoot!

And just in case you remember the post I did about Guard Donkeys you will be happy to learn that llamas are also used as guard llamas for sheep and other small farm animals.

365 Days of Photos – Day 102

This picture was taken from a rest area on west bound Interstate 20 in Palo Pinto Texas. From the parking lot I could see an amazing tapestry of greens behind the rest area. I couldn’t help myself…I grabbed my camera and headed toward the bluff overlooking this sea of greens.

This part of Texas is West of Fort Worth (maybe 45 minutes) but before the true “West Texas – desert lands” begin. No too much farther along this highway and the landscape turns brown.

K – Keepsake

Recently my mom gave me this quilt made by her mother.

My grandmother lived to be 93 years old. I was very fortunate to share an adult relationship with her and my grandfather (he lived to be 92). They were married for 72 years.

The last time I saw my grandma (AKA Nanny) she was is a hospice hospital. I had flown to Ohio to spend time with her and grandpa. While I was there I drove grandpa to hospice so we could visit with Nanny. During our drive each day he would tell me stories of days gone by. He was a wonderful story teller.

During one of those stories he told me about the first time he met Nanny. According to grandpa they were 8years and 10 years and Nanny told her friends, “I am going to marry him.”

That afternoon, during our visit, I asked Nanny if Grandpa’s story was true or if he was just pulling my leg. Even though Nanny was somewhat sedated and not totally alert, she looked at me and said, “He was the cutest boy I ever saw.” Needless to say a few tears formed in my eyes.

I have several keepsakes from each of my grandmothers and with each I have happy memories. However, even without the physical reminders, they will forever live in my heart and in my memories.
